Massage Therapy

Massage therapy offers not only pain relief, but is a powerful adjunct to healing with chiropractic.  Massage assists our healing in many ways: it melts away tension, relieving pain and discomfort.  This relief helps us relax physically, mentally, and emotionally.  Massage improves circulation and lymphatic drainage, thus improving the flow of nutrients to the tissues and the removal of toxins from the body.  It improves flexibility and joint range of motion, reduces inflammation, and improves muscle tone.  Regular massage helps us cope with life’s challenges better because we feel mentally and physically fit.

Deep Tissue Massage is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity (such as athletes), and patients who have sustained physical injury. It is not uncommon for receivers of deep tissue massage to have their pain replaced with a new muscle ache for a day or two.

Neuromuscular Therapy is a form of soft tissue manual therapy. It is distinguished from other types of massage in that a quasi-static pressure is applied to the skin with the aim of stimulating specific areas of skeletal muscle. Often these areas of muscle are myofascial trigger points. NMT is a comprehensive program of soft tissue manipulation techniques that balance the central nervous system (brain, spinal column and nerves) with the structure and form of the musculoskeletal system. NMT is based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system maintains homeostatic balance.

The application of NMT is dependent on several key factors:

  • The location of myofascial trigger points
  • Force has to be applied perpendicular to the skin surface if muscle is to be stimulated

Myofascial Release refers to the manual massage technique for stretching the fascia and releasing bonds between fascia, integument, and muscles with the goal of eliminating pain, increasing range of motion and equilibrioception. Myofascial release usually involves applying shear compression or tension in various directions, or by skin rolling.

Prenatal Massage helps a pregnant women to relax tense muscles and reduce stress and anxiety associated with labor. It also works to relieve pain.
The expanding womb puts a lot stress on the shoulders, abdominal area and back muscles of the mother, and lower back pain is very common during pregnancy. A prenatal massage therapist can apply pressure to specific sore spots to relieve tension and pain. However, certain pressure points should be avoided, such as the wrists and ankles, because they might stimulate pelvic and uterus muscles and lead to premature labor.

Postpartum Care encompasses management of the mother, newborn, and infant during the postpartal period. This period usually is considered to be the first few days after delivery, but technically it includes the six-week period after childbirth up to the mother's postpartum checkup with her health care provider. Immediately following childbirth, a new mother experiences profound physical and emotional changes. She may stay in the hospital or birthing center a very short time, even as little as 24–48 hours after delivery. The physical and emotional care a woman receives during the postpartum period can influence her for the remainder of her life.

Sports Massage is a form of bodywork geared toward participants in athletics. It is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for athletic activity and maintain it in optimal condition, and to help athletes recover from workouts and injuries.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
